Modern identification

Cinnamon-rumped Trogon

Harpactes orrhophaeus

  • Certain
  • Checked against the engraved caption
  • Trogons · Trogonidae

Why

Gould's Harpactes rutilus (not Vieillot's, which he files under H. duvaucelii on I.67) is the Malayan trogon with a uniform cinnamon back and no scarlet rump: the Cinnamon-rumped Trogon. The plate shows the black-headed male with cinnamon rump and the brown-headed female; the survey's Scarlet-rumped Trogon is wrong.
