Why

Upper figures: Vigors's Coccothraustes icterioides, the Black-and-yellow Grosbeak, as the adult male (black head, wings, tail and thighs) and the grey, buff-bellied female behind it. The lower front bird is a female Collared Grosbeak (see the lower row).

Why

Lower figure: Gould's 'young male', grey on the head and throat with an olive-yellow body, is a female Collared Grosbeak, as he concedes in the V.23 text after Captain Pinwill pointed it out. Sharpe cites V.22 under the Black-and-yellow Grosbeak 'excepting the lower figure, which is H. affinis' female.
