Why

Gould's male is Bonaparte and Schlegel's Carpodacus sophia, a Himalayan bird he lent them, and his description is a translation of theirs: Blyth's Rosefinch, not Brandt's Altai bird. The upper male's dark crown sharply set off from a pale pink brow, and the female's pale, finely streaked brow, are Blyth's Rosefinch marks, and Sharpe lists the plate under Carpodacus grandis as 'rhodochlamys (nec Brandt)'.
