Why

Picus insularis Gould, from Formosa, is Dendrocopos leucotos insularis, the Taiwan White-backed Woodpecker: Gould and Swinhoe compare it with P. leuconotus, and the plate shows the male's red crown, white-barred lower back and streaked flanks, with no white shoulder patch. The survey's Great Spotted Woodpecker is wrong.
