“Malayan Pygmy Woodpecker”

Iyngipicus auritus

Engraved caption: IYNGIPICUS AURITUS.

Modern identification

Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker

Yungipicus moluccensis

  • Certain
  • Checked against the engraved caption
  • Woodpeckers · Picidae

Why

Sharpe's 'auritus' is the Sundaic bird (syn. Picus moluccensis Gmelin, fusco-albidus; Malaya, Java, Sumatra, Borneo), and the plate shows it: brown crown, brown-barred back, streaked underparts. That is the Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker; Eyton's name auritus now belongs to a race of the Gray-capped.
