Why

The plate shows the Brown Eared-Pheasant: chocolate-brown body, white ear tufts and tail base. Gould used Pallas's auritum for the birds of the hills west of Peking, with Swinhoe's mantchuricum as its synonym; auritum is now the Blue Eared-Pheasant.
