Why

Gould's name and description (tail 'white at the base') are the Western Gerygone's, but both figures are Brown Gerygones: a brown tail base, black band and white tip spots, a rufous-buff rump, flanks and vent, and a short white brow, with none of the white tail base that II.99 shows. His NSW brushes and Hunter River nest are the Brown's (race richmondi), and Sharpe cites this plate for eastern birds he describes the same way.
