Why

Gould's Corvus coronoides covered every Australian corvid, but he writes that the plate represents a male killed in Van Diemen's Land, where the Forest Raven is the only corvid, and the figure's massive, deep bill is the Forest Raven's. Its throat hackle is a ruff of pointed feathers, not the Australian Raven's long beard, and Forest Ravens have hackles too, so the drawing does not outweigh the specimen's stated locality.
