Printed on the plate
“Yellow-billed Albatros”
Diomedea chlororhynchos
This identification is still open; the reasoning below says what would settle it. If you can, open an issue with the evidence.
Modern identification
Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross
Thalassarche chlororhynchos
- Open, leaning
- Albatrosses · Diomedeidae
Why
Atlantic or Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross? The heads on the plate are washed blue-grey, which says Atlantic. Gould's text (head snow-white, grey only near the eye) and his Australian records say Indian. The base of the yellow culmen stripe would decide (broad and rounded in Atlantic, narrow and pointed in Indian), but it is foreshortened here. Gould first met the bird at 30°S 20°W and names no specimen.
