Procellaria Cookii

Engraved caption: Procellaria Cookii

Modern identification

Gould's Petrel

Pterodroma leucoptera

  • Certain
  • Checked against the engraved caption
  • Shearwaters and Petrels · Procellariidae

Why

Not Cook's Petrel. Gould's specimens came from 'a small island near the mouth of Port Stephens' (Cabbage Tree Island, the only colony of Gould's Petrel), and he synonymises his own Procellaria leucoptera. The plate shows a dark slaty hood on white underparts beside cabbage-tree palms; Cook's Petrel has a pale grey head.
