Why

The plate is drawn from Temminck's unique Lagopus brachydactylus, lent to Gould, and that specimen survives as the holotype in Naturalis, Leiden (RMNH.AVES.226893, from northern Russia via Feldegg), whose type catalogue identifies it as Lagopus lagopus. It is a winter Willow Ptarmigan, as Ogilvie-Grant also judged.
