Why

Macrorhamphus griseus is the Short-billed Dowitcher by name. Gould's summer figure has discrete black spots on the foreneck and breast, not bars, and broad orange-buff fringes above: a Short-billed of the rufous-bellied hendersoni type, not the Long-billed of Great Britain IV.76. Long-billed was not yet separated, and the winter figure cannot be told apart.
