Why

The figure is a Neotropic Cormorant in breeding dress: an orange-yellow gular pouch edged with a thin white line, white filoplumes on the head and neck, and a long tail. Gould's text adds lanceolate scapulars and Temminck's view that Brazilian birds are the same. Temminck lent the specimen. Ogilvie-Grant (Cat. Birds BM xxvi) puts the plate in P. vigua. Linnaeus's graculus is the Shag.
