Modern identification

Northern Gannet

Morus bassanus

  • Judged
  • A variant
  • Boobies and Gannets · Sulidae

Why

Temminck's melanura was killed in Iceland and, Gould says, is a Solan Gannet in every respect but its black tail: a near-adult or aberrant Northern Gannet, not the Cape Gannet. Ogilvie-Grant puts the plate in Sula bassana. The figure's gular stripe is short. The folded wing hides the secondaries, which are all black in a Cape Gannet.
