Why

Audubon's “Scaup Duck” (Fuligula marila) is a Lesser Scaup: in 1844 Audubon wrote that the bird described in his Ornithological Biography and figured in his large plates was the smaller scaup, Vigors's Fuligula mariloides, and Baird, Brewer and Ridgway list plate 229 under the Lesser Scaup. audubon.org agrees
