Why

Audubon's “Golden-eye Duck, male summer plumage” (Clangula vulgaris) is a male Barrow's Goldeneye, which he took for the Common Goldeneye of plate 342 in breeding dress: crescent-shaped white face patch, purple-glossed head, black back with a row of white spots.
