Why

Gould's Aquila naevia lumps both spotted eagles (pomarina is in his synonymy). The young bird, drawn after the Cornwall birds of 1860–61, is blackish with rows of large pale drops across all the wing coverts and no pale nape: a juvenile Greater Spotted Eagle, not the Lesser.
