Why

Gould's 'Lagopus rupestris' is a Scottish bird from the Earl of Derby's collection that Gould himself suspected was a female Common Ptarmigan in summer dress; Ogilvie-Grant puts the plate under Lagopus mutus, not the American rupestris. Rock Ptarmigan, female summer plumage.
