Modern identification

Figure upper

Printed “Cinereous Shearwater”

Great Shearwater

Ardenna gravis

  • Judged
  • Shearwaters and Petrels · Procellariidae

Why

The upper figure is one of Strickland's Tees birds, smaller than Temminck's Cory's: a dark brown cap, white underparts, a dark (not yellow) bill and a pale uppertail patch. That is the Great Shearwater, and Dresser cites the figure under Puffinus major. Gould's description of yellow bill and ash-grey head is Temminck's Cory's.

Sooty Shearwater

Ardenna grisea

  • Certain
  • Shearwaters and Petrels · Procellariidae

Why

The lower, all-sooty figure is Strickland's Puffinus fuliginosus from the Tees mouth, which Gould took for the young: a Sooty Shearwater. Dresser and Salvin cite this figure under P. griseus.
